What's Included
Deck Coatings Matched to Your Wood and Your Exposure
Bare cedar, pressure-treated pine, and composite decking showing its age each need a different system. We offer solid-color deck paints for maximum protection, semi-transparent and transparent stains that let the grain show, and sealers for composite and low-maintenance surfaces.
Solid-Color Deck Paint
Best for older or weathered wood that needs full coverage. Forms a solid, opaque protective layer and offers the most coverage.
Semi-Transparent Stain
Shows the grain while adding UV and moisture protection. A good fit for cedar and pressure-treated pine in decent shape.
Transparent or Clear Stain
A natural look for newer, high-quality wood that lets the full grain show through while still protecting against moisture and UV.
Composite Deck Sealers
Cleaners and sealers formulated for composite boards restore color and sheen without peeling or damaging the manufacturer's surface treatment.
Railings, Steps, Pergolas, and Fences
Finished to match the deck, in the same visit, so the whole outdoor space looks like one project.
On-Site Finish Assessment
Every project starts with an on-site look at the deck's condition, sun exposure, and drainage before we recommend a product. A south-facing deck in Valparaiso and a shaded one in Chesterton should not get the same finish.
Our Process
Our Deck Preparation & Application Process
Three steps, done in order and never rushed, so the finish bonds to clean, dry wood and lasts through Northwest Indiana winters.
01
Inspection & Cleaning
We check the structure, boards, and railings, then the deck is power washed to remove dirt, mildew, and old peeling finish.
02
Surface Preparation
Loose or damaged boards are repaired, surfaces are sanded smooth, and the deck is allowed to fully dry before any product goes on.
03
Staining or Painting & Sealing
The chosen stain or paint system is applied in the right conditions, following manufacturer dry times between coats, and finished with a protective sealer where the product calls for it.

Why White Stone

Stain or Paint
Deck Staining in Valparaiso: Choosing the Right Finish
Transparent, Semi Transparent, or Solid
The real difference is how each one wears. Transparent and semi transparent stains soak into the wood and fade slowly, so a refresh coat goes on after a good cleaning with little sanding. Solid stain sits more on the surface. It covers stains and mismatched boards, but when it wears it can peel like paint, and going back to a see through finish later means stripping it all off. We weigh that with you before anything goes on.
When Paint Makes Sense
Deck paint works on older decks where the wood is worn, patched, or mismatched and you want one even color. It needs more upkeep on walking surfaces, so we often suggest paint on the railings and stain on the floor boards.
Fences, Railings, and Pergolas
We finish these with the deck so the colors match. Fences take full sun and lawn sprinklers, and pergolas have a lot of edges that need careful brushwork.

Upkeep
How to Tell When Your Deck Needs Attention
The Water Test
Sprinkle some water on the boards. If it beads up, the finish is still working. If it soaks in and darkens the wood within a few minutes, the deck is ready for a new coat.
Graying, Peeling, and Soft Boards
Gray wood means the sun has broken down the surface fibers. Peeling means a film finish is letting go. Soft or split boards mean water is getting in, and those boards need repair before any stain goes on.
Cleaning, Brightening, and Stripping
Every deck gets cleaned to remove dirt, mildew, and gray fibers. A brightener then brings back the natural color of the wood so stain soaks in evenly. If an old film finish is peeling, we strip it, then sand rough or raised grain and fix loose boards and popped nails.
Best Season to Stain in Northwest Indiana
The wood has to be dry, and so does the forecast. After washing, a deck needs dry days before we stain, and we avoid hot midday sun that dries stain too fast. Late spring and early fall usually give us the best stretch of weather.
FAQ
Deck Staining Questions, Answered
Cost, timing, stripping, and composite decks: the questions we hear most from Northwest Indiana homeowners.
How much does deck staining cost in Northwest Indiana?
It depends on square footage, railing and stair detail, how much stripping or repair is needed, and the product you choose. We assess the deck on site and give you a written, itemized estimate, free and with no obligation. How long does deck stain last here?
Depending on the product, sun exposure, and foot traffic, a quality stain typically lasts two to four years before it needs a refresh coat. Lake-effect weather is hard on horizontal surfaces, so we recommend a maintenance timeline for your specific deck.Do I need to strip old stain before restaining?
Only if the existing finish is peeling, flaking, or incompatible with the new product. In many cases we can clean and lightly sand instead of a full strip. We determine that during the on-site assessment. What is the difference between paint and stain for a deck?
Paint forms a solid, opaque protective layer that hides the grain and offers the most coverage. Stain penetrates the wood and lets the natural grain show through while still protecting against moisture and UV damage. How soon can we use the deck after staining?
Most stains are dry to the touch within 24 hours but need 48 to 72 hours of cure time before furniture or heavy foot traffic returns, weather permitting.Do you work on composite decks?
Yes. We use cleaners and sealers formulated for composite materials to restore color and sheen without damaging the manufacturer's surface treatment. When is the best time of year to stain a deck in Indiana?
Late spring through early fall, when the wood is dry and temperatures stay in the product's application range. Fall is a smart time to protect the deck before the first freeze. Can you stain a new pressure treated deck right away?
Usually not. New pressure treated lumber is wet from the treatment and needs time to dry out before it will take stain. We can check your deck with the water test and tell you when it is ready.
Can you switch my deck from solid stain to a semi transparent one?
Yes, but the solid stain has to come off first, since a see through stain cannot hide it or soak through it. That means stripping and sanding, which we will include in your estimate.
Do you replace deck boards?
We fix loose boards and replace a few damaged ones as part of prep. If the framing underneath is in bad shape, we will tell you so you can have it repaired before we stain.
