Homeowner Guide

How to Plan a House Painting Project

Most projects start with one thing that bugs you. A scuffed hallway. A faded front door. Peeling paint over the garage. Start there, then walk the house and write down everything else you have been meaning to get to.

Fix what protects the house first

Bare wood, failed caulk, and peeling exterior paint let water in, and water damage costs more than any paint job. Cosmetic rooms come next. If the budget is tight, we would rather paint fewer areas well than spread the prep thin across the whole house.

Pick the right time of year

Interior work can happen in any month. Exterior painting and deck staining around here need dry days and nights that stay warm enough for the coating to cure, so that work fits between spring and fall. The outdoor calendar fills early, so call over the winter if you want the outside done this year.

Choosing colors with confidence

Paint chips are small and store lighting is harsh. A gray that looks soft in the aisle can read blue on a north facing wall or turn yellow under warm bulbs. Put large samples on two walls and look at them in the morning, late afternoon, and at night with the lamps on. For a whole house, pick one main wall color, one trim color, and an accent or two, then repeat them room to room. We bring color guidance to every estimate and can brush samples on the wall first.

Pricing

What Affects the Price of a Paint Job

Nobody can price a house accurately over the phone, because the same square footage can be a quick job or a slow one. These are the things we look at during the walkthrough, and each one shows up line by line on your written estimate.

Size of the space

Wall and ceiling area set the baseline. Open floor plans and tall stairwells add more surface than most people expect.

Surface condition

Nail pops, cracks, water stains, and old patches need work before paint. Outside, peeling paint, chalky siding, and soft trim all add time.

Prep work

Scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, and priming take most of the labor. It is also where a low bid usually cuts corners.

Height and access

Two story walls, vaulted ceilings, and stairwells mean ladders, planks, or staging. Steep yards and tight side yards slow setup.

Number of colors

One color throughout goes faster than a new color in every room. Accent walls and deep colors that need extra coats add time.

Trim and detail

Doors, windows, crown molding, built ins, and spindles take careful brush work. A plain bigger house can cost less than a smaller detailed one.

Questions to Ask Any Painter

✓ Who will be at my house each day?
✓ What prep is included for each surface?
✓ How many coats, and on which surfaces?
✓ How will you protect floors and furniture?
✓ What happens if you find rot or damage?
✓ Will we walk the finished job together?

How to Compare Painting Estimates

Getting more than one estimate is smart, but two totals rarely describe the same job. Check three things before you look at the bottom line.

Read the scope

Each estimate should list the rooms or sides of the house, the surfaces (walls, ceilings, trim, doors, soffits), and the number of coats. If one bid leaves out the ceilings, it is not cheaper. It is smaller.

Look for the prep

A line that says "paint living room" tells you nothing about what happens first. Ours spell out the cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, and priming for each area.

Ask who shows up

Some companies send a salesperson to bid and a different crew to paint. Josh Boss, our owner, gives every estimate and works the job alongside Noah, our foreman, and Zar, our painter.

Before Day One

How to Get Your Home Ready Before We Arrive

We cover floors, furniture, and landscaping and handle the surface prep ourselves. A little help from you the week before makes the first day go smoothly.

✓ Inside: Take pictures, mirrors, and curtains off the walls being painted, and clear small things off shelves and dressers. Move breakables and electronics out of the room if you can. Large furniture can stay; we cover it and work around it.

✓ Outside: Trim shrubs back from the siding, move grills, planters, and patio furniture away from the house, and shut off sprinklers so the walls stay dry.

✓ Pets and kids: Plan where the dog will spend the day and tell us which doors to use. Open cans and wet trim are no place for paws or small hands.

FAQ

Questions Homeowners Ask Before Hiring a Painter

  • How do I know if a painter in Northwest Indiana is reputable?

Ask who will be on the job, whether the estimate is written and itemized, how they prep, and whether they will walk the finished work with you. At White Stone, the owner gives every estimate, works on site with the crew, and walks the job with you before we call it done. You can also read what our customers say on Google.

  • How is pricing determined?

Square footage, surface condition, number of colors, and the amount of prep required. Every estimate is written and itemized before work begins, so you can compare it line by line.
  • How long does a typical residential paint job take?

It depends on the size of the house, how much prep the surfaces need, and whether we are working inside, outside, or both. We give you an expected schedule with the estimate and keep you posted if weather or repairs change it.

  • Will painting disrupt my daily routine?

We work room by room where possible and protect furniture and floors, so most homeowners stay comfortably in the house during the project.
  • Do you help with color selection?

Yes. We offer color guidance at the estimate and can recommend finishes and shades suited to your home's lighting and style.
  • Do you offer a warranty on your work?

Ask us at the estimate about the current workmanship guarantee and the manufacturer warranty on the products chosen for your home.
  • Why do painting estimates for the same house vary so much?

Mostly because they describe different jobs. One may include ceilings, trim, two coats, and full prep, while another covers walls only with one coat. Compare the scope line by line before you compare the totals.

  • What is included in a White Stone estimate?

A written, itemized list of every area and surface, the prep each one needs, the number of coats, and color guidance. It is free, and there is no pressure to decide that day.

  • Do I need to be home while you paint?

No. Many homeowners go about their day. At the estimate, we go over access, pets, and any rooms that are off limits so the crew knows the plan.
